Asus releases new wireless ac3100 router – RT-AC88U dual band with beamforming, MU-MIMO and link aggregation, with powerful Broadcom NitroQAMTM technology to boost the wifi speeds.
Surely we would ask, why wireless AC3100 router? Hasn’t been there already a wireless AC3200 router? At a first glance they are not much different, just a speed difference up to 100Mbps when in fact they are greatly different. Asus AC3200 is a wireless three-band router, like other wireless AC3200 routers that have been around for a while such as Netgear Nighthawk X6, or in Linksys EA9200, and also D-link DIR890L. They are all three-band wireless routers. But Asus RT-AC88U is a dual band wireless AC3100 router.
Broadcom NitroQAMTM technology
With only two bands the router can deliver speeds up to 3100 Mbps just 100Mbps speed difference with other existing three band routers (3200Mbps) , what is the speed if it is a three band router? That’s what we see now in Asus RT-AC5300 router with speeds of up to 5300Mbps. So where is the main difference? The difference is the uses of Broadcom NitroQAMTM technology that can boost 5GHz data throughput up to 2167Mbps and at 2.4GHz band it boost speeds of up to 1000Mbps. So that’s why in three band wireless router, with Broadcom NitroQAMTM technology it can deliver total speeds of up to 5300Mbps (2x 5GHz 2167Mbps plus 1x 2.4GHz 1000Mbps).
In two band version, with Broadcom NitroQAMTM technology Asus AC88U can deliver speeds of up to 3100Mbps.
What this router does
This is the new era of Gigabit speeds in wifi, it feels like it were just couple of days ago when 5G wifi was introduced in wireless router with the speeds of up to 1750Mbps. And today you can feel the fast lane of three band wireless router with speeds of up to 5300Mbps. And the dual band version you can find here in Asus RT-AC88U that delivers total bandwidth of up to 3100Mbps, one 5GHz band with speeds up to 2167Mbps and one 2.4GHz band with speeds up to 2.4GHz band.
The other advanced feature is the capability of link aggregation that can deliver double wired speeds of up to 2Gbps by combining two Gigabit Ethernet Ports. It is like a network teaming feature in Windows server 2012.

Actually Asus also releases another similar router, the Asus RT-AC3100 dual band router. What is the actual difference is the number of Ethernet LAN ports is only 4 compared to 8 ports on RT-AC88U. with twice the total number of Ethernet LAN ports you can add more devices to the router with wired Gigabit LAN connections. With more heavy duty devices connect to LAN ports of the router, the more bandwidth demand. When all those wired connection access files from the NAS intensively, you need to install high speed NAS. Thanks to link aggregation feature in Asus AC88U. With link aggregation you can add NAS which has link aggregation feature to get the maximum data rate throughput of up to 2Gbps.
