D-link introduces new high speed dual band router DIR-885L/R featuring smartbeam, Smart connect and is powered by 1.4GHz dual core processor. How is it compared with Asus RT-AC88U?
D-link is successful in shipping the wireless AC3200 router (D-link DIR-890) and competing with its rival Netgear X6 in three band router category. Now the next challenge is to compete in wireless AC3100 category with its new D-link DIR-885L/R router.
What this product does?
Remember the wireless AC3200 router such as DIR-890, TP-link Archer C3200, Netgear X6 and still more, they are all three band routers. The highest speed each band can deliver is up to 1300Mbps in 5GHz band, and up to 600Mbps in 2.4GHz band. The D-link DIR-885L/R is based on wireless AC3150 technology which is dual band with the highest speed in 5GHz band is boosted up to 2,165Mbps, and in 2.4GHz band is boosted up to 1,000Mbps. The aggregated bandwidth in two band is up to 3,150Mbps, nearly the same aggregated bandwidth of wireless AC3200 routers (theoretically). With this technology the three band router can boost up to 5,300Mbps. This is what we see in Netgear Nighthawk X8 and in Asus RT-AC5300 routers.
The theoretical highest speed of up to 2,165Mbps is obtained by the use of Broadcom NitroQAMTM technology that is also applied to Asus RT-AC88U and all those AC5300 routers. DIR-885L/R is the fastest router can deliver each band offered by D-link today, and later with its AC5300 router.

Both are powerful high performance wireless routers, the highest speed in each band ever made so far. Both have similar features and technologies.
With MU-MIMO (Multi user MIMO) technology the router delivers data throughput to multiple clients at the same time, as opposed to single user MIMO. That means it perform faster for more devices. The smart connect to assure the router to automatically assign the wifi clients the best band it can connect. Legacy clients will connect to 2.4GHz band, while the fast clients will connect to the fastest 5GHz band.
D-link DIR-885L/R comes with 4×4 antenna design will cover large area with solid connection using 4x data streams design in addition of SmartBeam technology. Similar technology for Asus AiRadar which is originally beamforming technology.
DIR-885 is like other wireless routers in general that come with four Gigabit LAN Ethernet ports, Asus RT-AC88U comes with more LAN ports twice as many as other routers in general. In addition Asus AC88U featuring Link aggregation which combines two LAN ports to a single high speed 2Gbps link port. For normal usage in home, probably you don’t require that link aggregation. You require this feature for applications that demand high speed data rate throughput such as NAS with the same link aggregation feature.
Unfortunately D-link DIR-885 featuring only one single USB port – USB 3.04 which is ideal for high speed storage. Should you require additional USB port for printer, well you cannot host it at the same time as storage. Too sad for high end router.
