Linksys E8350 Vs Nighthawk X4 Vs RT-AC87U

Linksys just released a new version of high speed wireless ac2400 router – E8350 early Oct 2014 which is now available in the shelve of electronic stores around you should they update with new stuffs. Linksys also introduces a new three-band wireless ac3200 router – like those have been introduced by Netgear with its Nighthawk X6 and Asus with its RT-AC3200 router.




 

What this product does

Linksys E8350 is a wireless ac router with 4×4 data streams delivering speeds of up to 1733Mbps wireless AC and up to 600Mbps wireless N. Traditionally wireless ac technology delivers speeds with two or three data streams such as Linksys EA6500 wireless ac1750 router. 4×4 data streams router supports MU-MIMO (multi user MIMO) technology.

What is MU-MIMO? Traditionally single user MIMO antenna which delivers one single stream of one or more antenna transmitter(s) to the wifi clients and at the other end of clients receive this signal with a single multi-antenna receiver. In multi-user MIMO antenna technology each of the antenna delivers independent streams of data and independent radio terminals – each having one or multiple antennas.

Linksys E8350 wireless ac2400 router is ideal for handling heavy-bandwidth activities and heavy network traffic such as online HD gaming and HD video streaming.

Linksys E8350 ac2400

Netgear released similar router early this year with its flagship wireless ac2400 router Nighthawk X4 which is receiving excellent customer ratings with averagely 4.3 out of 5 stars, a delighted achievement. On the other side, Asus also released similar product –RT-AC87U wireless AC2400 router, however it receives less favorable ratings compared with Nighthawk X4 (aka Netgear R7500). So what make those routers different (if any)?

Hardware

Both Nighthawk X4 and Linksys E8350 have the same processor chip – Qualcomm IPQ8064 dual core 1.4GHz processor. inside of this chip is 2x krait 300 CPU with clock speed at up to 1.4GHz, and two network accelerator engines with clocked at up to 730 MHz, capable of processing up to 5 Gbps of aggregate throughput.

Asus RT-AC87U comes with different processor chip – the Broadcom BCM4709A 1GHz dual core processor. This is a communication device processor which is commonly used for home routers, home gateway or any types of switching control and management. Inside is dual core Cortex-A9 CPU with maximum clock 1GHz. Asus adds another separate dual core processor to handle specifically for 5GHz 4×4 wifi processing tasks. Off course, compared to single processor for handling all the processing tasks – this router performs much better with separate router for four-streams of wireless ac tasks in addition of main processor.

Ports

Since both Linksys E8350 and Nighthawk X4 come with the same processor chip, the ports are the same including 5x Gigabit Ethernet ports for LAN (4x) and WAN (1x) interfaces. Moreover, they also come with two USB ports, one USB 2.0 port and one high-speed USB 3.0 port which is 10 x much faster than USB 2.0 port. However, Linksys comes with combo type e-SATA/ USB 2.0 port instead of separate USB 2.0 and e-SATA ports. You can attach either USB 2.0 or e-SATA disk device to this single combo port. You can attach both printer and disk storage to each of the USB port together.

Another port that Asus RT-AC87U doesn’t have is the e-SATA port. Broadcom BCM4709A processor doesn’t feature e-SATA port in its chip design.

3G/4G Support

Like other high performance Asus wireless routers including Asus RT-AC66U and RT-AC68U, Asus RT-AC87U supports 3G/4G sharing. You can share USB dongle in case of broadband internet is not available. The other two routers do not support 3G/4G sharing.
